Private a kiss of winter

#1

aurora

"Breathe. Just breathe." Aurora chided herself internally as her own rasping breath reached her ears. Nothing in this world had prepared her for the Bifrost. Beaten and dirtied, the princess moves from the underground and blinked against the sunlight that now dappled the ground around her. Everything in her body ached-- including parts of the body she hadn't even known existed until they burned with exertion. Stumbling slightly the young mare moved toward a lake. Her eyes narrowed slightly, perhaps from exhaustion or happiness from seeing a water source. As she neared the crystalline waters, Aurora pulled the tattered, bloodied, and dirtied fabric from her shoulders and dropped it near the waters edge. Next she loosened the remaining braid of her tail, the thick and knotted tendrils unfurling and falling free. She cared not for the chill in the air at this very moment, with no concern for the kiss of winter.

Slowly she eased herself into the shallows, the water coming halfway up her chest. The icy water had the sting of winter though it eased her tired muscles in a way she hadn't been expecting. It was far different bathing here out in the open, and it was a strange feeling to her. Aurora was used to her private quarters and warmed water with maids to dutifully care for her pristine white locks. Now they merely floated through the water behind her, the knots becoming no less entangled. She frowned, a small sigh falling from her lips. "If only the crown prince could see me now," she spat under her breath, stomping a hoof beneath the surface of the water and created a small wave which crested against her body.

Though her anger dissipated after a moment as the realization that she had abandoned her country hit her again. A chill shuddered across her pale body and she dunked her head beneath the water, squeezing her eyes tight and willing it to all go away. She shouldn't have run. She should have shut her little mouth. She had wanted love like her parents...and he could not give that to her. Who is to say she had any right to abandon everything she was taught?

She resurfaced with a heaving breath, her mane slicked and following every line of her neck while her forelock clung to the sides of her face. Even waterlogged there was something elegant and enchanting about her. Though all Aurora cared about was getting clean, she felt dirty inside and out.

I KNOW THERE'S BEEN STIGMA 'ROUND ME,
I KNOW YOU HEARD THINGS ABOUT ME ―
He found himself coming here more often than he personally would have liked. To be perfectly honest the boy king should have been within the safety of his kingdom, watching over the realm and keeping an eye on his people. But he had some time to spare now that he had appointed Tywin to the position of Jarl. The glacier frosted man could no doubt hold the fort while he walked beyond the boarders of Tryggr. Perhaps he was here because he wished to see what was happening just outside of his house. There was a brief sense of peace over the valley right now, but for how long? When would the wolf god Fenrir decide to strike with his dire wolves once more?

An exasperated huff fell from the young lad's velveteen lips, his breath collecting in a silvery brume before him. The bite of winter had only grown worse as the days pressed on. So much so that it persuaded the boy to wear his new dire wolf cloak. The thick fur worked as an excellent buffer against the cold, sealing in warmth as he continued on his aimless trek. Before long andante found himself reaching the familiar lands of Slidr lake as he crested over the hill. There was a brief swallow as he lightly smacked his lips together at the sight of the crystal clear water. He had grown parched during his journey and now longed for a drink.

Rubine cloven hooves carried the young hellhound forward until the gift of the nymph's rang within his ears, causing the very flora around him to speak. A troubled woman lies up ahead. Aid her young king. Help her... The whispers echoed, within the realm of his mind. Ebony harks flattened against his crown as he continued to walk forth, crimson eyes scanning to area. He did not see anyone just yet, but he knew that the voice of forest was never wrong. Upon rounding the corner his critical stare landed upon an alabaster mare bathing alone within the frigid waters of the slidr lake.

Halting his gait he hesitated, surely she would not have wished to be interrupted during such an activity. But his mind could not push away the advice he had been given. A defeated look seemed to flicker across his visage briefly before he continued towards the waters edge. Passing the tattered and bloody shawl strewn across the ground he quickly glanced back at the lone woman. Ah, pardon me for intruding...But are you alright? You don't seem to be around from here. He offered, tipping his head slightly to one side. She had to have been a newcomer to the valley. The undeniable must of the bifrost clung to her pristine pelt and a hint of some other far away foreign land.

Whatever may come.

They had escaped. Seeing the faint light after clearing the labyrinth they had fallen into had been a blessing. The white knight thanked all the old Gods his tired tongue could remember as they stumbled onward. Percy had never been a religious sort growing up, nor when he was well into his knighthood, but clearly something had shown them the way out. Something - or someone - had rescued them. That was the only thing that made sense in this strange, harsh new world that Percy found himself in. Bewilderment and suspicion burned bright in Percy's mind, yet he refrained from letting either show as he continued traveling with the princess. Now that his cover was blown, there was little use in shadowing behind her like before. Besides, she seemed more at ease now that his presence was known.

Percy would never admit that being able to keep a closer eye on Aurora also put him at ease, too. Now he could easily interfere should something go awry.

His mercurial gaze watched the pale princess from the sparse tree line. A deep frown etched faint wrinkles into his white muzzle, betraying the stress that plagued him since their flight from home. Though it was cold, Percy knew Aurora needed one simple pleasure in life - even if it was just a bath. She had given up significantly more than Percy; a whole life of luxury gone within a blink of an eye. She had shouldered a hard life of being a vagabond well for a royal, even he had to admit. Many others would have cracked and returned home long ago. A sigh escaped Percy, remembering all she had given up for her freedom. He ignored the mist curling around his face, refusing to let his gaze waver from his vulnerable charge. He tensed briefly as she slipped beneath the surface of the water, but restrained himself.

Percy's ears twisted, catching the hoof falls of another. His frown twists into something far less friendly as his silver eyes dart away from the princess to find the intruder. A tall chrome colored lad, slashes of ruby break up the monotony. Whoever he is, he seems uncertain at first. Despite his uncertainty, he speaks, drawing Percy from his own hiding spot among the brush. Mercurial orbs are narrowed slightly, wary of whoever their new guest may be. "We are not," he answers before Aurora can, his rumbling baritone announcing his presence before he appears. Splattered in mud and bedraggled, he knows he is certainly a sore sight in comparison to Aurora. He stopped at the lake's shore as if to shield Aurora from some imaginary threat. "Just stopping to rest after whatever hellhole spat us out into this land."

Aurora was not a fool. She knew bathing out in the open was not something a royal did as it invited others to gawk, however she was no longer a princess. She knew she'd have to get used to not having the life of luxury she once had. Biting her lip, Aurora tried to relax her weary bones and weakly moved her injured wing beneath the water. Ripples stretched out from her body and she could see the shadows of a few fish as they moved away. This was far different than when the maids drew her a nice warm bath, far different. "Ah, pardon me for intruding...But are you alright? You don't seem to be around from here." His voice cut through her thoughts like a hot knife and she turned, a gasp falling from her pale lips. Shock became evident on her face as she quickly dropped herself farther into the water, until only half of her head was exposed. It was only for a few moments as she realized how silly she was being and she hesitantly stood up, water rolling off the curves of her face.

Aurora opened her mouth to speak just as Percy stepped from the shadow of the trees and she instantly felt herself relax as a relieved smile crossed her face. Even her eyes softened at his approach. "We are not." Though the smile did not last as she scrunched up her nose at his second comment. "Just stopping to rest after whatever hellhole spat us out into this land." Aurora huffed slightly, moving closer to the shore. "Percival!" She had no way of knowing if that terrifying tree and this land belonged to the intruder and the last thing she wanted to do was insult someone.

"Pardon my traveling companion, sir." A soft smile graced her features as she effortlessly transformed into her princess persona. "My name is Pr--," for a moment her expression wavered as her brow furrowed. "My name is Aurora, and this is Percival." She dips her head politely, "I'm afraid we aren't sure where we have ended up and have suffered a few minor injuries." The princess smile had returned to her features and her aching wing all but forgotten.

I KNOW THERE'S BEEN STIGMA 'ROUND ME,
I KNOW YOU HEARD THINGS ABOUT ME ―
He could understand the sense of initial shock that caused the femme to go hiding partially underneath the cold waters surface, for he had come out of almost nowhere. An apology formed but died on his lips as he turned his dark chrome crowned head to face the new bulky male emerging out of weathered shrubs and other various foliage. Silently he sized up the towering man, looking over the muddled appearance that stained patterned checkered fabric and shin guards. But what interested Andante the most was the silver sword that swung freely within its earth toned sheath at the ivory stallion's hip.

This of course lead him to believe that the new stranger was some sort of kingsmen. But he did not wear ambrosius' vibrant banner colors of yellow and the scent that lingered upon him ruled him out for being part of vromme's allegiance as well. The young king did not move, instead he stood firmly grounded, cool and collected as the accented stallion quickly inserted himself between the gap separating him from the pale tinted mare still standing within the frigid water. Andante's crimson gaze cut off to the side, where he could hear the woman fussing at the the man towering over him.

That's right, come put a leash your lap dog... The thought to himself as he allowed his gaze to pan back over to the one named Percival. Well, it's not wise to rest here out in the open where packs of dire wolves are known to run about. He allows his voice to trail off as he glances back over at the mare introducing herself as Aurora. In return he offers a small bob of his head to signify a brief nod. Giovanni, it is a pleasure meeting you both. He added, deciding to go along with his fake alias. Ruby colored eyes skimmed for various injuries before he continued on. This is slidr lake, but you are far from any kingdoms if that is what you are searching for..

Whatever may come.

“Percival!”

The princess’s sharp tone sliced through the air like a knife, reprimanding him with the single word. His frown deepened, but the white stallion did not waver from his position at first. His mercurial gaze cut to where the pale mare stood in the water, as if he was silently questioning her at first. His teeth snapped together decisively, opting to not have a battle of wills in front of a stranger. But later? Oh, she must know she was due to get an earful. With a snort, the weathered knight turned his gaze away from Aurora to settle on Andante. His expression slid into a cool mask of indifference, standing firm despite Aurora’s gentler words.

They might not be home anymore, but he still had a duty he had sworn to uphold. He had every reason to be wary of any stranger they might meet. His princess was far more amiable and charismatic than he, but also easily led astray. Percy would not let any harm come to her, no matter the charming words a stranger might spin.

Percy’s silver gaze narrowed slightly, a muscle twitching somewhere in annoyance. “My...lady is in no condition to travel far. We only need a safe place to recover our strength and to tend to her wounds.” His eyes darted back to Aurora briefly, allowing his standoffish demeanor melt away in a rare moment of tenderness due to his concern. Percy knew he could continue traveling, often forcing himself to move along despite his injuries. It would be nothing new for him...but for his princess, he was uncertain. He would not put her health at risk. She was not as experienced, having lived a comfortable life of luxury before her flight. Despite his own concerns, he found himself sighing. “If she is comfortable with more traveling, then so be it.”

Aurora's stormy eyes widened at the mention of dire wolves and her ears slid back. A shiver rushed across her soaked pelt, and not just from the icy waters. Her pale lips hung open for a moment before she closed her mouth with a loud snap. Her gaze shot to Percy with hesitance before she returned them to the stranger. Gathering her strength, or what was left of it, she curled her waterlogged wings up across the gentle curve of her back. Her steps, while still sweeping and elegant, seemed somewhat hurried as she pulled herself from the water's edge. "Don't shake, don't shake. A lady never shakes." She tried to distract herself with something the maids had chided her with when she was young after a bath in an effort to not think about what she had just heard. Instead she allowed the water to slide down her sides. Her mane and forelock clung to her face and neck, but she paid it no mind as she stood at Percy's side.

"Dire wolves," she started, her brow furrowing as she took another glance at her knight. Surely, this was a joke? "They are things of tale and song. They surely can't be real?" She felt another shiver and she unconsciously moved closer to Percy as if having him by her side would shake away the bad thoughts and nightmares. "If they are...," she trailed off for a moment, gritting her teeth together in frustration.

Taking a moment to steel herself, Aurora closed her eyes. She took a deep breath and raised her gaze to Andante. "If what you say is true, I ask that you may give us some guidance. I know nothing of this land, except that I am here now. If what you say is true, I beg that you tell us of a kingdom where we might find safety." Despite her earlier fright, the look in the young princess' eyes was hardened and confident. She did not have her family's name to fall back upon anymore, but that did not mean she would just curl up and die. She was not just a princess, she was far more than that.

I KNOW THERE'S BEEN STIGMA 'ROUND ME,
I KNOW YOU HEARD THINGS ABOUT ME ―
Andante watched silently as the pale colored princess called aloud to reprimand the decorated knight. He almost, almost, allowed the corners of his lips to twitch in minor amusement. However, he was able to continue to uphold his mask of cool indifference. Again, he allowed his attention to drift to where the mare stood in the water. He could not see any visible cuts but bruises ran skin deep. With another blink of his eyes the garnet haired boy turned his attention back toward the towering one named Percival, offering the ivory man a shallow nod of his head. I understand.

Before long, the princess of a distant land eased her way out of the frigid waters to come and stand beside her loyal escort to voice her concerns. A couple of months ago he too would have thought the massive beasts a thing of pure legend. But he'd seen both them and their god, along with the amount of damage they could do. They are most certainly real. The entire valley becomes their hunting grounds at nightfall and everyone can hear them howl their promises of chaos. He murmured with an annoyed sigh exiting his nares in the form of a snort. The valley had become an even harsher place to dwell with them around.

As Aurora seemed to contemplate what to do he briefly allowed his gaze to trail towards the red woods. His mind's eye reminiscing on the battle fought there with the vile creatures. If the pair were lucky, they'd never have to encounter one of the large lupine mutts. Once the femme made up her mind, Andante nodded his head once. Of course, to the east of here is a kingdom by the name of tyrggr. They would not mind taking the pair of you in and caring for you while you tend to your wounds. With a beckoning flick of his leonine tail Andante turned about, beginning to lead them in the right direction of the pine covered kingdom.
