Open and so our story begins.

Time had continued to trickle since she had found Fimbulvetr. Not nearly as glacial as it had been, but it was still noticeable. Her days passed dreadfully slow, one day just as mundane and routine as the next. Normally, Antiope would have relished with a stable routine. To wake up and know what to expect, where one thing would happen, when she would lay her head down to sleep - if she even slept at all - would have once been a very important staple to her lifestyle. But just as she had broken the wheel of servitude, freeing herself from a neverending cycle of always giving in to the whims of others, so had she bucked having a daily routine.

Now a routine felt...wrong. It left a lingering, disjointed feeling to hang over her days like a foreboding stormcloud. All she knew that there was something somewhere in these dangerous new lands that called to her. The itching that had driven her from her throne and the new life she had begun to build had subsided. Not enough to be significant, oh no; it was still there, tickling along her spine. Yet, it was not quite as maddening as it had once been. The crawling, disconcerting feeling still taunted the weathered mare the longer she took to find her destiny.

The air was crisp with a chilly bite to the breeze, hinting of a cruel winter yet to come. It was blissfully quiet on this overcast day, allowing the pegasus to weave among the redwood giants in peace. Eyes of a burning, bloody garnet keep a vigilant watch on the woods around her despite the sense of ease she feels. The only sounds that fill the quiet are her own hoof beats, her breathing, and the quiet rasp of steel against steel. A deep red cloak which had seen better days is wrapped carefully around her shoulders and drapes over her sides to obscure much of her armor from view.

Yet Antiope knew that despite the quiet and tranquility, peace never lasted long.

The thing she missed most since settling down in Vromme, Kagura decided, was trees and forests. Grosugr was a haven of wide-open plains and rivers that glittered like jewels, but she would never tire of her want to slip under the deep shadows of ancient oak and wood and share in the quiet majesty of trees. Thankfully, the land she had chosen to inhabit bordered just such a gem of a forest to the south, and it wasn't long before the priestess's red-stockinged legs brought her wandering among the redwoods' great trunks. The winter sun was bleak and pale in the sky, but it threw down gentle rays through the leaves and cast a dappled blanket over her scarlet and pink frame weaving below. Though the leaves here stayed evergreen, the bite to the air and the mist of breath forming from her lips gave evidence to the winter months ahead.

All was silent in this part of the woods, even the incessant birdsong sounding muted as though far-away and distant. The only sound that reached her ears was that of her own hoof-steps and the drag of her tail over the leaves, punctuated every so often by the thud of a nut or pine cone dropping from some lofty perch. The gentle plop, plop brought a remembered song to her mind and a smile to her lips, and Kagura paused in her walk for a moment as she recalled the words from her memory. No religious song of worship this was, only a little melody learned from villagers far away, but the tune was as sweet and simple as their lives and lent itself well to her practiced singing voice. Why not entertain these great sentinel redwood spirits with a song, one that they had probably never heard before? Continuing on her destination-less way, she began to sing gently,

静かな静かな 里の秋
お背戸に木の実の 落ちる夜は
ああ 母さんとただ二人
栗の実 煮てます いろりばた

The words to the next stanza escaped her memory, however, and as she paused to ponder them she was roused from her thoughts by the rustle of another set of hoof-steps, accompanied by a soft metallic-sounding scrape. Someone else was wandering, or perhaps traversing, these woods as well, and Higurashi stopped in her tracks, considering if she should greet them. Her presence, of course, was already made obvious; it was only a matter of whether or not the other party wished to approach.

Ancient giants towered over Antiope, their great limbs groaning with the wind. The pegasus mare did not fear them, though. If anything, the desire to fly was so strong it nearly made Antiope itch. The need to climb, climb, climb to the highest branch of such a gargantuan tree and see the view from upon the woodland titan's crown was nearly overwhelming. To see the vast expanse of the valley that she now called home and its breathtaking views would surely be a sight one could rarely boast of.

Yet, the champagne and bronze warrior remained grounded. Burning garnet pools stared up at he speckled canopy far above her. The leaves far above her whispered invitingly, almost getting Antiope's resolve to snap. The cold kiss of the wind caressing Antiope's exposed frame forced a subtle shiver to rattle her bones, reminding Antiope to continue moving. She would stay warmer if she kept moving. Turning away from temptation, the pegasus forced her legs to move so that she could rather begrudgingly continue along on her travels. After all, she was not here to dawdle or to gawk at the scenery. With a displeased huff, condensation curled around Antiope's scarred face in a white cloud.

Antiope didn't have to walk long before the feeling of something amiss was forgotten. Instead, her attention shifted toward the distant sound of a soft lilt not far from her own path. The words were strange, the language utterly foreign to the fairly learned warrior. Yet, for as alien as the words were, it sounded...pleasant. Almost like a little tune nannies would sing to their flock, or maids would have sung as they went about their business in the marketplace. For a moment, the memories of singing and the scent of spices wafted across Antiope's mind. It swept away as quickly as it had come, but for a moment the pegasus could pretend she was not so far away from home. She found her hooves moving on their own accord, drawing nearer to the gentle singing.

Her brows rose slightly at what she saw, but she knew that she was likely not what was to be expected either. Colored like a tropical sunset, the singing mare looked rather out of place amongst the aged redwoods that towered over them. Clearing her throat awkwardly, Antiope had the sense to look moderately apologetic. "I, uh - I'm sorry. I just heard singing, and..." she rasped, trailing off with her unfinished thought.

One heartbeat went by, then two, and for half a second Kagura thought that whoever it was would simply pass her by. But then round the bend came the most striking mare she had ever seen, and her breath caught in her throat in surprise and awe. The stranger was tall, so tall that she dwarfed the priestess easily by several hands at least, and she had the musculature and impressive armor to match; a better blend of raw power and androgynous grace Kagura had never seen before. The winged woman even moved with the kind of swagger that boasted better than words of assertive confidence, the kind that magnetized the eye with domineering presence. It was all Higurashi could do to keep from staring at those swirling crimson tattoos far longer than was polite, and with a slightly embarrassed cough the foreign lady forced herself to glance down instead, her usually silver tongue suddenly uncharacteristically inarticulate. "Don't be," she protested weakly, wincing internally at how high-pitched her voice came out. This woman's sheer presence made her feel weak, self-conscious, and small in more than just the literal sense, and Kagura had been caught completely off-guard.

「いい加減にしな!」she chastised herself mentally. 'That's enough!' Clearing her throat, the sunset-styled femme raised her golden gaze to meet the tall stranger's scarlet one, a polite smile carefully smoothed into place as she tried not to get too distracted by the shades of fire that danced in those eyes. "If you enjoyed my song, then it would be my great honor," she finished more eloquently, satisfied that her voice had returned to its usual tone and pitch. Her charismatic mannerisms, smooth and gentle as silk, had also recovered from her initial embarrassment, though inwardly she remained as self-conscious as a blushing filly. Dipping her head in an elegant, courtly bow, the violet and crimson lady opted to introduce herself, partly in hopes of learning the imposing stranger's name in return, partly because she still felt a little too flustered to say anything else without embarrassing herself more. "I am Higurashi Kagura, of Vromme," she began, remembering almost as an afterthought to mention the name of her new House. "So pleased to meet you."

#5
At first, Antiope blinks several times as if her eyes are playing a trick on her. Sure, she had seen some things during her life thus far - been to far-flung lands, seen so many different faces. Logically she knew that equines could come in all shapes and sizes, colors and forms. Yet, the vibrancy of the mare before her was so unexpected that it throws the pegasus off for a few moments before she regains her senses and realizes that she's likely been staring. Well, now I'm just being rude, Antiope thought abruptly, realizing her faux pas. Shaking her head, she refocused on the sunset colored mare before her. She was rather petite and significantly shorter than Antiope - which was fairly common given Antiope's towering height and bulky frame. Points of dark purple and vibrant pinks bleed into a golden center, reminding of sunsets off of Kythria's aquamarine waters from so long ago.

An easy-going smile twists Antiope's lips, lopsided due to the scarring along the right side of her face and lips though no less endearing. Fire opal pools meet molten golds, glad to at least not be seen as a creep for interrupting the mare's lovely song. "I certainly did, though I must say I'm woefully ignorant of the lovely tongue your song was spoken in," the pegasus answers politely, Antiope's husky voice octaves lower than Kagura's. Antiope remembers her manners, proving to not be a complete brute by sweeping into a respectable bow in response to Kagura's - her wings sweeping from her sides in an elegant flourish. A rather genteel, masculine display of a proper greeting but it seemed perfectly fitting of a mare of her stature.

"It is a pleasure to meet you as well, Lady Higurashi Kagura," Antiope continues, the foreign name rolling off her tongue in a curious, but a not unpleasant way. It is certainly a name she has never heard before. The gold and bronze pegasus's head tilts slightly as she regards Kagura in a moment of silence. "I'm Antiope, though no other fancy titles follow my name." Had it been months ago it would have been a different story. But none of her old names, titles, or crowns mattered here. Here she was invisible, a no one, and it was rather invigorating.

#6
One could not blame the priestess for not having the least idea what to expect - in all her years, despite having traveled quite far, she had never come across another woman who rivaled this striking tattooed stranger by any metric, whether it be physical build or sheer presence. The religious order she had been raised in, despite being exclusively female, had offered very little in the way of variety, every priestess uniformly sheltered, dainty, and painstakingly cultured to think, act, and behave in a very particular manner. Even Higurashi, one of the very few adventurous types who chose to leave those sacred grounds for the wider world outside, was a product of that upbringing through and through, and the royal court where she had stayed next was full of similar such genteel ladies. But a warrior woman, tall, scarred, and intimidating in her crimson cloak and armor? Would she act like a gruff soldier as well, blunt and uncouth? Or would she have a lady's gentle charm beneath those muscles? To Higurashi's delight, however, neither of those possibilities proved to be quite right. The response, the subtly flourished bow, and that perfectly crooked smile - all spoke of a well-mannered, noble courtesy, a rather gentlemanly demeanor that disarmed and charmed the lady's heart in equal measure. And, if she wasn't mistaken (in these matters she very rarely was), those sweetly-chosen words even held a hint of coyness to them, and the enticing possibilities brought the heat and a smile to Kagura's face.

"Thank you," she said graciously, along with another pretty little bow. "Though much is lost in translation, the lyrics speak of longing for a loved one's return on a lonely autumn night." Accompanying her gently accented words was just the slightest raise of a brow, a hint of a playful curl to her lip. Though her tone remained as even and petal-smooth as ever, that knowing golden gaze seemed always to suggest at more things unsaid. "It seemed fitting, though now that Antiope-han has joined me I shall sing no more of lonesomeness." And on that she elaborated no more, but there was really no need - as far as subtext went, that was quite overt for anyone paying half a mind of attention. Instead, she continued on smoothly without missing a beat, inquiring politely, "Have you a destination that I am keeping you from? I myself came only to pray and meditate among the spirits of this wood."
