i was the beast all alone in my hell

The finned mare seemed to have developed a habit of fading in and out of obscurity. However, as she was someone who did not deserve to be lied to, it wasn't entirely unwarranted or uncommon or uncalled for. She was not important, could not be important, would not be important. She almost thought never would be an applicable word, but could she truly ever know?

Not that it mattered, of course.

Inane banter about nothing that really mattered because it was about her aside, da Analas had wandered away from the border between here and somewhere else, where giant bugs might not eat her. It seemed pleasant enough here, the air sparkling and smelling of the rich rot of plants that had given in to the peaceful sleep of death. She was alone, currently, but that had never really bothered her if she was lying to herself. Which she wasn't, because she wasn't worth it, but no one had to know. No one. No one no one no one. Pasting a happy smile on her face, Jesrith moved through the trees, berry bushes scraping along her diminutive frame, Why was she here? Honestly, she didn't know, wasn't sure she cared. She had just decided she was tired of not speaking to others, and so she went to a place that didn't even smell like anyone else. Definitely a way to make lots of friends, going somewhere that no one else seemed to care about. But at least it was pretty.

Would she still have made Vromme her home were it not so abundantly filled with rivers and lakes? The answer to that she could not be sure of, but the beautiful cleansing waters of this land were something Higurashi was infinitely thankful for. Purity of one's mind and soul began with purity and cleanliness of the body, and so the rituals of cleansing and washing were of utmost importance to the young priestess and her sisters who had raised her.

She stood just past knee-deep in the waters of the lake, the reds and pinks of her coat polished to a vibrant and gleaming sheen. Violet tresses floated freely in the waters where they kissed the surface, the remainder already dried in the early evening air. The twilight hour, that sacred boundary where night and day mingled and became one, approached, and Higurashi Kagura was already deep in prayer, head bowed, eyes closed, and silently murmuring words known only to herself. The waning sun's golden light, filtered and diffused through the late autumn fog, blanketed her in a soft glow and cast blinking reflections from the water's peaceful surface. A frog croaked from somewhere among the reeds, joined by a mournful bird calling from the distance in a soulful duet.

A rustle in the bushes, and suddenly the frog fell silent, startled from its hiding place by someone's approach. Higurashi's eyes blinked open, gold as the sun, and her gaze swiveled towards the shore. Save for that small movement of her eyes, she did not stir from where she stood just yet. "Good evening," she greeted the emptiness.

Her footsteps were dull against the thick leaf mold, frosted-glass eyes that faintly glowed with perfect white darting from one frond to another. In the short-distance she heard of quiet splash; a body of water, a lake if she understood the area well enough, seemed to be close. Water. She could always count on it to flit about her body as though she was something worth noticing, someone worth contemplating. What a filthy liar, but she had learned a lot from the fluidity of water on how to live her life. Give, give, give, even if they didn't deserve it. Taking only when they deemed it fit to receive or, more common, when they grew perilously careless. While water did not differentiated between those that mattered and those who did not, it did have some words to say on how to live a liar, and what to do if lied to in return.

Jesrith hated liars, except when she was one.

Diminutive frame pushed through the brush until she came upon a sunset scene playing out in the water. Except... the sun was not in that direction. Liar, but a pretty one, perhaps even one worth her time. The sweetsun mare in the water before her was taller than da Analas - even at a slight distance it was easy to assume this - with colors rich and warm, as vivid as the translucent mare was pale. Jesrith's body, at least. Her mane and tail-fin were considerably more obviously there. Tiny near-white hooves glided into the water, slowly approaching the other mare in a roundabout way that allowed her to sink into it's depths, claws barely grazing the water. "Well, hello," the mare called softly, voice akin to a hungry gull.

Higurashi watched with no small amount of fascination as Jesrith emerged from the brush and slipped into the lake water herself. The priestess had long since accepted that the residents of this foreign land, with their wildly varied and unique appearances, often struck her as somewhat supernatural-looking even when they were no less mortal than she. But of all the exotic-looking foreigners she'd met so far, few had made her question whether they were mortal or spirit as much as this diminutive creature. At first she had thought the shadows on that pale skin merely markings, but two seconds of observation later and she realized abruptly that she was, in fact, seeing the girl's very bones through her skin that those of some translucent fish. Even the fin-like structures that she sported where Higurashi had only tail hairs reminded her of some aquatic creature, as did the way her mane seemed to sway in some invisible current. If she had to guess, the priestess would have thought her a water nymph of some sort, although experience had taught her that what seemed outlandish and supernatural to her eyes might very well be the norm in this place.

A greeting was offered in response to her own, and despite her tiny stature, it became clear that the stranger was no slip of a child but perhaps even closer to Kagura's own age. One ear cocked towards Jesrith in interest, a nod of the head offered in polite acknowledgment, and she inquired in her petal-smooth accent, "Have you business in the lands of Vromme, Ojou-han? Perhaps I can be of assistance." Trespassers, she knew, were often not looked upon kindly by the Houses, but Higurashi had always tended towards leniency until otherwise necessary. As the last slivers of brilliant gold slipped below the distant horizon, leaving only streaks of red to mark its place, so too did the priestess retire from the water. She pulled herself dripping from its comfortable embrace, pausing on the banks to let the remaining water stream from her mane and legs and trickle back into the lake, and merely watched the nymph with a mild curiosity.
