Welcome to Slidr River Valley, home to the strong, the brave, and the resilient. Challenging the odds surmounting against them, the Houses of equine fight in a power struggle for ultimate control over the Valley. With the Bloodless fading away after the First Great Winter of Three, Fimbulvetr, the Slidr River Valley is in a state of discord as the Houses throw themselves into an arms race for power. From predators to the gods themselves every day ushers in a new obstacle to overcome. Fimbulvetr is a literate intermediate-advanced fantasy horse role-play with a survivalist concept. The environment is designed to work against your characters as they move forward in their journey through the arcana riddled realm of Slidr River Valley. With an immense history and lore, we encourage our members to create locals and "outsiders" alike.

Summer Year One | The sun is high and it is long, and with it as are the days. Summer has claimed the entirety of the Slidr River Valley and in doing so has cast higher, comportable temperatures throughout the Southern and Central territories. The Western still boasts snow capped mountains, but mud slides are frequent and they are heavy. The North remains green, just warm enough to cultivate and brood the new life there, but the further you tred the lower the temperatures fall, their mountains still ice cladden and snow tipped. The East, the poor souls, is sweltering. At night the temperatures drop to the Valley's daily warmth. Little can be done to add comfort, and each day the Oasis becomes drier and drier...

halani

Somewhere along the line in her travels, Halani had come across a tree. Massive and foreboding she could not help but allow her curiosity to draw her closer and closer. She crested a small hill and it came into view with branches like the grasping tendrils of a beast. A sigh reached her throat but did not pass her lips as her nerves threatened to spill from her. Whether she was driven by excitement or anxiety it was hard to tell. Hooves of glistening obsidian draw to a halt while eyes of the palest skies trail over each twisting branch. Thick lashes cast downward as she steels herself, the corners of her lips turning upwards into a smirk. So it was excitement.

Raising her gaze back to the gnarled behemoth of a tree before her, Halani took a few tentative steps forward. Her thick mass of a tail twitched, a few stray strands grazing her haunches and sending a shiver up her spine. She moved past the thick gnarled roots and entered the corridor below. A slow dripping of water echoed and reached her slightly curled ears that were so far forward they may have threatened to break off. A feeling of dread creeps over her for a moment as a loneliness settles in. It was unlike her to feel this way, having often wandered on her own in different circumstances. Perhaps she could feel that her life was going to change so drastically and sense it upon the draft behind her. Though more likely the idea that something like this was beneath a tree was more than a little unnerving to one who had lived in a forest all her life.

Halani craned her neck, sapphire gaze falling upon the light that still filtered behind her. She could turn around or she could keep going. Her heartbeat thundered in her chest, threatening to snap her bones in two. No. She had not left her clan to live on the easy side of things. Hell, if she wanted to never experience adventure and excitement she'd have stayed there and avoid contact with anyone. With a firm nod to herself, Halani moved further into the corridors following nothing but her intuition.

Something is happening! Another had come. Another soul to judge upon entry, another body to enter the Sildr River Valley. The Bifrost smiled upon this one as she radiated jovial excitement at the prospect of the unknown. Before the newcomer, the roots of the trees begin to creek, move. The dark is heavy and thick with earthy scents; and there along the carefully trodden path stands a mighty stag. His fur is whiter than the moon, eyes a-light with pale fire, horns twisting together in spirals from a refined, almost regal head. He is but a single flame in the dark.

On his chest, a slit opens. A tongue colored black drips with saliva, teeth protrude from red gum-like flesh. A voice erupts from within this strange creature;"Garas min vir lethallan!" Come this way!--the voice commands as teeth chew the foreign words into existence. Before the doe-like mare has a chance to speak, the Stag turns his regal head and bolts into the dark.

Will Halani follow suit? Or will she lose her guide in the ever winding labyrinth?

"I am dumb to tell the weather's wind,"

It seemed from any point in the valley the behemoth tree, the Bifrost, had it's eye trained on whoever dared look it's way. Today, it seemed that the mortal Marrow had made the unreasonable dare to contest that ancient colossus across the Valley. This early in the morn, when the sky had yet to yield it's dark blue and the softest of yellow peaked upon the horizon, everything was silent. The only stimuli came from the tree miles across the valley, baring down upon Marrow with a vague threat. The call of an eagle startled him into a jolt, a plum of hot air billowing from his nostrils to showcase the depth of the chill held to the Ambrosius kingdom. Despite the oncoming summer, the North held true to it's name. While thickets grew heavy with wild flower and the sun gleamed upon verdant leaves throughout most of the Valley (and still too in the foothills below the House's banner), the summits of the North remained snow capped. Frost laced the vegetation at his gilded hooves, and the thick cloak he'd kept as a reminder of his past still hung draped upon his shoulders to help secure what little warmth can be found in the northern nights.

Marrow couldn't quite explain it. Some mornings he awoke and felt compelled to venture towards the Bifrost. While in the midst of their thousand yard staring contest, at some point the speckled prince knew he'd have to pay a visit today, even if that meant leaving the place he'd freshly called home. Breaking the ties with the tree and ultimately relenting in their game, the young wayward prince cast his stare to the snowy mounts that pierced the thick blanket of clouds. 'Mystery and power at it's finest', he thought, before one final glance cast itself along the rest of the Slidr River Valley. All of it... a beautiful realm of mystery, danger, and power. Something unlike what he'd even seen before. While his wanderlust heart craved an open road, he did not find sorrow in settling in such an unbridled realm.

Plus, it was so vast every day opened to a new adventure, even when visiting familiar locations.

He wouldn't reach the Bifrost until mid day, with weary legs and sore hooves. The trail of his banner was dirtied with a dull beige and yellow from slipping through the fertile sod, and his golden hooves were tarnished with a thin layer of grime. The only point of his journey where he found pause came now. The roar of rapids promised a painful death to those who were not surefooted across the natural bridges to the great tree, and this was were Marrow halted. Roots tangled over one another, captured stone in their knobby fingers, and stretched almost like a web across the ravine that dove deep into the mountains. Creaks echoed in the air, and Marrow could have sworn if he fell very still he could feel their reverberations in the air.

He considered, for a couple of moments at least, the enormity of this pause. Even though he'd woken to the sight of this enormous timber for some months now, it still posed a great obstacle whenever it drew him in. It was a massive challenge to the progress of his new life. It bid him either enter and brave whatever trials were hidden below (again), or to turn tail and head back to the safety of the Ambrosius cliffs. His brow pinched, drawing the fresh pink scars of his ventures into a pucker. Marrow was not a man to shy from a hard road. A high step drew him upon the bridge, across it through the ethereal mist, and below into the rock laden mouths of the labyrinth. Whatever the Bifrost had in store for him this time, he was ready and eager to prove to this sentient magician that he could never be beat.

Through the echoes of water droplets he ventured, his audits forward and alert, twitching with hyper-awareness. His steps, though steady and continuous, were cautionary and deliberate. He eyed the steep drop offs of some paths while electing for others. Slowly his sight adjusted to a world succumb to darkness despite the shafts of gilt light that at times broke through the ceiling to offer guidance. (He always wondered where the light came from, for surely they were too far beneath for the sun's rays to pierce). The roots molded, shifting eternally so the paths were never the same. At times he would come to the most minute of pauses to watch a particular braid of roots solidify and fall to rest before continuing. It was one quite elaborate that had drawn his attention, fulling arching his visage to see, so that he nearly missed the great white stag that bound before him, on a path that intersected his own. Of course he startled, nostrils flaring and his stance ready to choose between fight or flight.

"I'm seeing things again..." he exhaled, jogging up to the path and casting his gaze along the trail of the stag. "Or this damn thing really does have some magic in it."

halani

The farther Halani descended beneath the roots of the tree, the more things changed. It would be safe to assume this was not just an ancient and curious place-- it was also a magical place. For a moment she finds her heart being squeezed in a vice as she thinks back to her clan and how much they had wished for her to wield the powers of a mage. She had disappointed them time and time again until it had become too much to bare. She was a danger to them all. She missed them terribly but this was the start of her adventure. She could not be wasting her time and she certainly shouldn't be losing her composure in this situation. Halani halted a moment, peering into the inky darkness as her eyes began to adjust better and tried to make out shapes in the darkness. It seemed futile and a short sigh falls from her pale lips. Though she would not be alone much longer.

Suddenly, it appeared. From the shadows a stag of glimmering white. Halani loses herself in the creature's face, eyes of the palest skies staring unblinking. "Fenedhis!" Her voice rings out in surprise, echoing through the corridor. Had her father been here he certainly would have scolded her for using such vulgar language. But a Halla here? There is no mistaking what she is seeing, right? Halani shuts her eyes tightly and lets a moment pass before she lifts her long lashes again. No, not a Halla. An even stranger creature. The creature's chest splits and a tongue spills from the cavern of the mouth. Saliva drips downwards, the sound of it hitting the floor breaks the tense silence. Those words. The language of her people. It was strange to hear it here. Before Halani even has a chance to respond, the beast is off. "Wait!" Halani calls out though it doesn't seem to reach the quickly disappearing mass of white that winds itself down paths she didn't even notice were there.

Finding her resolve, Halani too dashes forward. Her hooves clatter against the roots beneath her as muscles work twice as hard to keep her up on such unstable and changing terrain. It was then that he disappeared around a corner and Halani attempted to follow, only to find herself met with the roots moving once again to create a large chasm. Swallowing loudly, she leaps across the gap and prepares to follow. Only to find herself careening towards another horse. Her eyes widen in surprise as she drops her hindquarters in an attempt to quicken her speed decrease. She subconsciously closes her eyes and flicks her long ears back against the gentle curl of her neck. Halani's body finally comes to a stop and she stands on uncertain hooves before glancing up toward the stranger.

"Savhalla," she dips her head in greeting, albeit awkwardly. She had to admit she had not expected to see anyone else down here. Though she tried to hide her surprise, refusing to remove her gaze from him. Small as she may have been, Halani was fearless-- foolishly so at times. "What are you doing here?" Her eyes narrowed slightly. She could not sate her curiosity, though the same (slightly rude) question could have been asked of her. While Halani had done lots of watching of those not of her clan she had limited actual interactions with them. His bright golden eyes reminded her of the fields of yellow grass she had once wandered and of the bright sun that didn't reach them here. Without waiting too long for an answer her impatience got the best of her and she remembered what she had originally been doing. "Oi! You see a mouthy deer run by here?" She craned her head, attempting to look past the stranger and forgetting in an instant she had almost run straight into him.

be swift!

Though the cervine had been lost in the collision, it did not remain so. The soft dim glow that emanated from it's form pierced through the root wall behind the young stud Marrow. As if a conjureror of this place, the roots ebbed away, coiling and toiling about one another to reveal the gaping chest-mouthed stag. It's tongue slipped from the parting and lapped at it's lips absently. Ghostly eyes watched them with nothing but numb sentience. A chuckle erupted from the mouth in it's chest, sneering at the two as it reared up.

Like an arrow it was gone again, bolting down a newly formed path, it's glow growing dimmer as the spectral creature disappeared down the corridor. "Shemmala!" it mocked, it's voice ringing with the same clarity as if it had still stood before them. "Shammala, Halani!"

There was a delay in his reaction.

Ideally, he'd like to have heard her sooner. Far sooner. By time his nape whipped around and his golden hooves planted into the dirt laden floor, she was skittering to a stop. Pebbles ticked and tumbled, some clacking against his hooves, but inevitably she managed to rein herself in before an actual collision took place. Of course, Marrow flinched, retracting a step or two so swiftly he'd hardly even registered it. When his wits - dazed, confused, and regretting ever returning to this damned place - finally returned the princeling's long lashes fluttered back to the maiden.

Armor clad with a coat resembling that of spring fawns, Marrow could have found himself lost in the unique aesthetic she portrayed. There was an elegant, a graceful, but also a fierce quality to her. It showcased in her dexterity, in the lithe muscles of her limbs, and of course her pretty sapphire eyes. And those pretty sapphire eyes never seemed to leave him; they just stared, as if untrusting of his intent. Though he loathed to admit it, she was far more equipped for a tussle between the two of them. A single audit flicked back, and while his golden eyes struggled to peal away from her, they buckled beneath the pressing query: was she running after that stag? Gilt orbs glanced over his shoulder just she inquired on his purpose. "Honestly, I have no idea..." he muttered, casting his handsome features back to her.

Of course, before he'd hardly finished answering her, she posed the more pertinent question. "You see a mouthy deer run by here?" "Actually, ye-" his voice was severed when a soft glow permeated through the roots behind him. He could see the silhouette of his shadow cast upon the female, and the gentle highlights that danced along her eyes and slick obsidian hooves. Without further hesitation, Marrow swung his hips round so that he stood abreast her, and witnessed the true creature that had barreled through his path.

The roots seemed to bend to the ethereal cervine's will, it's spectral glow almost blinding at the close proximity. Squinting through the radiance, a slithering appendage lapped at the creature's chest. With further squinting - although time was of the essence, and the... thing spoke a foreign language to the dame in haste - Marrow's mind came to the baffling reality that it was a mouth. A mouth in the stag's chest. But as quickly as it had appeared, the long and nimble legged beast reared back and bolted down the newly opened path. Still hovering on the brink of stupefaction, Marrow suddenly felt the same odd yearning that had pulled him here in the first place. He didn't know what the buck had said, and he wasn't entirely sure he wanted to become privy to the creature's strange arcanum, but he knew one thing. When in the Bifrost, don't squander your chances. Everything happens for a reason.

A quick glance was passed to the femme stranger before he darted down the corridor, golden hooves thundering down the loam path and nape snaked down to account for the pearled horn that arched for his visage.

Besides, following was more fun anyways.
